The tobacco industry is extremely competitive, but consumers麓 loyalty is a very important characteristic. Although in times of recession some consumers switch to cheaper brands, markets in which population grows are still considered key drivers for growth. Strict anti-smoking regulation, taxation and litigation represent high barriers to entry, which are attractive for well-known brands. So let's take a look at two companies in the tobacco sector and see which one is doing better and thus stands as the best investment.

Sina is an online media company that aims to serve Chinese consumers in and outside of China. The stock is now resting after seeing large declines in the last few years. Over the last four quarters, earnings and revenue numbers have improved, which has pleased investors. Relative to its peers and sector, Sina has been a poor relative performer, year-to-date. WAIT AND SEE what Sina does in coming quarters.

So far this year, our holdings in this area did not work well and the overall IT sector performance was dragged down especially by two small-cap companiesina Corp (SINA) and Digital China Holdings. Sina, one of China most popular web portals, came under selling pressure due to market concerns that its Twitter-like online communications services Weibo, may be losing its growth momentum to a main competitor. However, we continue to hold Sina as we believe the target market for its competitor is different from Weibo and we also believe Sina current valuation does not reflect its other attractive underlying assets. From Matthews China Fund (Trades, Portfolio) Second Quarter 2014 Commentary. Also check out: Matthews China Fund Undervalued Stocks Matthews China Fund Top Growth Companies Matthews China Fund High Yield stocks, and Stocks that Matthews China Fund keeps buying Currently 0.00/512345

A month ago he was concerned about SINA (NASDAQ: SINA ) , fearing that Alibaba purchasing an 18% stake in SINA Weibo might lead to problems for Baidu. SINA could potentially limit access to its real-time searches of Weibo content, just as domestic search giants had to shell out for access to Twitter. It would be a pretty big gamble for the popular micro-blogging platform since Baidu still commands the lion's share of China's search requests.

The main on-line competitors are:
Qunar.com, a travel website owned by Baidu (BIDU) and a few venture fundseLong (LONG), backed by Tencent (TCEHY.PK) and Expedia (EXPE). Analyst expect it to generate $163M in revenue next yearThat is pretty serious competition, needless to say. Having the backing of Baidu or Expedia offers several advantages, but Ctrip is the biggest and most established company. It's quite difficult to compare Qunar.com to Ctrip, for the simple sake that Qunar is a private company. However, there can be little doubt that it constitutes serious competition:

eLong (LONG) operates as an online travel service provider in the People's Republic of China. This stock closed up 7.5% to $19.79 in Wednesday's trading session.
Wednesday's Volume: 96,000
Three-Month Average Volume: 30,062
Volume % Change: 125%From a technical perspective, LONG spiked sharply higher here right off its 50-day moving average of $18.39 with above-average volume. This spike to the upside on Wednesday is now quickly pushing shares of LONG within range of triggering a big breakout trade. That trade will hit if LONG manages to take out some near-term overhead resistance levels at $20 to $21 and then above some past overhead resistance at $21.73 with high volume.
Traders should now look for long-biased trades in LONG as long as it's trending above its 50-day at $18.39 or above its 200-day at $17.40 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that hits near or above 30,062 shares. If that breakout hits soon, then LONG will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance level at its 52-week high of $24. Any high-volume move above $24 will then give LONG a chance to make a run at $30.
