For every stock you buy, does it have a catalyst?
Yes? No?
Most stock articles you read always include some sort of upcoming catalyst that is going to propel the stock higher. Heck, even ValueInvestorsClub requires every stock pitch to have a catalyst. But to invest only in stocks with clear catalysts defeats the purpose of value investing.
Catalysts are not important, nor are they required for an investment.
Take it from the man who defined value investing, Ben Graham. He just wanted one thing and spent his days with Walter Schloss searching for it.
Cheap stocks.
Warren Buffett also wants to buy one thing.
Awesome companies.
Neither mentioned anything in any of their writings about seeking a catalyst to make a successful investment. In fact, they told you the opposite.
Sit and wait, they said.
The problem is that sitting and waiting is torture today. There has to be action. There have to be fast moves up and if something does not play out within a few months, it a dud and not worth keeping any longer. ext!/p>

The recent strength from Sino-Global Shipping America, Ltd. (NASDAQ:SINO) and the now-renewed strength from Safe Bulkers, Inc. (NYSE:SB) would suggest those two stocks are among the very best ways to play the rebound currently unfurling in the shipping sector. And to be fair, both are fine companies in their own right. The top play in the dry goods maritime shipping arena, however, may well be Diana Shipping Inc. (NYSE:DSX). No, DSX isn't one of the fun and exciting small caps in the maritime shipping space. But, there's a lot to be said for size and stability, which SB and SINO can't offer.

Advisors' Opinion:- [By Dan Caplinger]
But one reason why trucking stocks have done so well is that investors are starting to see the potential for consolidation in the industry. Long-beleaguered YRC Worldwide (NASDAQ: YRCW ) apparently made an offer to buy out peer Arkansas Best (NASDAQ: ABFS ) in May, and although Arkansas Best rebuffed the bid, it still points to the efficiency gains that smaller trucking and logistics companies could gain from combining forces.

This week's winner
The top dog this week was, again, the star of this deeply discounted value portfolio, Arkansas Best (NASDAQ: ABFS ) . The trucking company soared 18% on the week after announcing that its ABF teamsters had ratified a five-year collective bargaining agreement, and passed a majority of supplements in the ABF National Master Freight Agreement. This news paves the way for Arkansas Best to, once again, be cost-competitive with its peers without having to reduce its workforce. Shares have now more than doubled in just the past two months. - [By Sean Williams]
Whom it competes against
In addition to competing against other trucking companies, perhaps nothing stands as more of a brick wall than labor costs. The inability for Arkansas Best (NASDAQ: ABFS ) to strike a collective bargaining agreement between its ABF Freight Systems subsidiary and the teamsters union nearly resulted in the company laying off 15%-20% of its workforce just to keep its costs competitive with its peers. You can literally see how important having competitive labor costs can be by the doubling in Arkansas Best's share price since the collective bargaining deal was announced.

The company has a current ROE of 14.85% which is higher than the industry median. In general, analysts consider ROE ratios in the 15-20% range as representing attractive levels for investment. So for investors looking those levels or more, AutoNation (AN), CST Brands (CST), Lithia Motors (LAD) and AutoZone (AZO) could be the options. It is very important to understand this metric before investing and it is important to look at the trend in ROE over time.

Advisors' Opinion:- [By Dan Newman]
Still, with a pure play in female condoms, the company achieves a staggering double-digit net profit margin: 44% for 2012. This dwarfs the conglomerate and Trojan condom makerChurch & Dwight's (NYSE: CHD ) 12% net margin, even though Church & Dwight is more expensive on a P/E basis and offers a lower dividend yield than Female Health.

Investors love stocks that consistently beat the Street without getting ahead of their fundamentals and risking a meltdown. The best stocks offer sustainable market-beating gains, with robust and improving financial metrics that support strong price growth. Does Church & Dwight (NYSE: CHD ) fit the bill? Let's look at what its recent results tell us about its potential for future gains.
- [By Eric Volkman]
Church & Dwight (NYSE: CHD ) has decided not to veer from its existing dividend policy with its latest payout. The company declared a dividend of $0.28 per share of its stock, to be paid on June 3 to shareholders of record as of May 13. That amount matches the company's previous disbursement, which was handed out in March. Previous to that, Church & Dwight paid $0.24 per share.

But I knew better, and so did many investors who saw P&G hardly budge following each warning.
For starters, P&G's problems weren't solely related to P&G -- they were sectorwide. Church & Dwight (NYSE: CHD ) , for instance, operates globally and was forced to lower its forecast last year after consumers began buying larger amounts of lower-margin items, and following a pricing war with P&G in the laundry detergent aisle. Kimberly-Clark (NYSE: KMB ) , the maker of Huggies diapers and Kleenex tissues, struggled as well with foreign currency translation, having $55 million in full-year profits evaporate because of an unfavorable exchange rate. The point is this was a sectorwide struggle, not just a P&G problem.
The P&G advantage
Whereas some view P&G's glass as half empty, P&G ran with this weakness as an opportunity to regain market share and further fortify its brand image. Over the past couple of quarters, it's done this through a number of key initiatives.

Facebook certainly took the spotlight in the decision from S&P Dow Jones Indices to include the social media giant in the S&P 500. But lost in the Facebook news was the fact that Alliance Data Systems (NYSE: ADS ) and Mohawk Industries (NYSE: MHK ) also gained admission to the prestigious index, while Abercrombie & Fitch (NYSE: ANF ) , JDS Uniphase (NASDAQ: JDSU ) , and Teradyne (NYSE: TER ) made their exit. Let's take a closer look at the other winners and losers in the Facebook index shuffle.
